Q67 – How much energy is embedded in agricultural products?

Introduction

In our project we want to find out the differences between organic products and regular products. Our main questions are:

how much energy does the production of organic products and regular products require? What’s the difference between organic products and regular products? And why should we buy organic products?

To give competent answers to the questions, we’ve interviewed an organic farmer and a regular farmer as well as other people with a survey. Additionally, we’ve compared different products (organic and regular) in taste and look.

Interview

green answer = organic-farmer
blue answer = regular-farmer

Our results in comparing the products

Nahrungsmittel Vergleich

Karotten:

The bio-products are more expensive than the normal products and you don’t find for every product also a bio-product.

Grey Energy

Summary

In the interview we learned that the organic-farmer has stronger specifications than a regular farmer. As well as that the organic-farmer is not allowed to use chemical poisonous substance. The result of our tasting test showed us that although, the organic-products don’t look very nice, they are much stronger in their taste. The grey energy is a big topic in the bio-industry, but the farmer said that it is very difficult to define it. It depends on the way of transport and the huge of the farm. Because of the fact that the answers of the farmers concerning the grey energy were not so informative we researched in the internet and found a very good chart about the average of the energy consumption (see above). In our survey we found out that the majority of the persons who we asked thinks, that organic-products need more energy for the production than regular products. In addition, a lot of people don’t know if they can trust the bio-label on the packaging.

Conclusion

This project showed us why organic-products are healthier than regular products. Now we care more about buying organic-products instead of regular-products. It was very interesting to see the differences between the farmer’s opinions. We think people should buy more organic-products. It was also very exciting to learn things about grey energy, because we’ve never heard about it before. However, it was very difficult for us to find good answers to our questions according to energy.

  2. Hi Team!

When I read the title about your project I was immediately interested to read more about your work! In my case I love to cook with organic products and I totally agree with you that some of the fruits taste way better than non-organic fruits.

I loved to read your article about your experiences and I think you both made a great job!

It\’s true that organic products are more expensive but it\’s something I can accept because I feel like I do something good for the world and that makes it worth it 🙂 I am not vegetarian nor vegan, but I think it\’s very important to be open and try new/ different food.

If you also like to cook & eat the way I do I can recommend you following restaurants/shops in Zurich:

  3. Hi Team Q67 🙂

Your contribution sounds very interesting and I could learn some new things about the differences between the process of normal and organic farmers I didn\’t know before. It was exciting to find out more about how the animals get treated and that the production of organic product need a bigger effort. I also like that you did a survey on your topic to see the different opinions about regular and organic products.

You mentioned that you have tested some foods and said that the taste of the fruit and vegetable of the organic product was more intense than of the regular product. Did you all changed your attitude about switching to eat organic products more often?

  4. Hey Team Q67
Your project showed me again that consuming bio-products is just a really good way for everyone. It\’s connected with more effort, but you get a better result for that. While I was answering your survey I already told to myself that I want to eat better and cleaner produced products. What I really like from your project is that you didn\’t just say \”bio is better anyway\”, no, you made research and tried it on oneself. I really appreciate this!
In our project (Q15) we had also to do with grey energy and I know how difficult it is to calculate. It would be exciting to learn more about the grey energy, but for this I think we all need an expert 🙂

    Nice job girls!
    Best Wishes

  5. Hi Team Q67

I was really interested while I was reading your project.
Nowadays people pay more and more attention on what they eat. And also I do. I want to eat healthy, want that the animals are treated well and that the environment suffers less.

The interview with the two farmers was very interesting for me.
I was surprised to hear that organic farmers are allowed to treat their animals with antibiotics. I did not know that before.

I hat one thought, whike I was reading your product comparison:
Shouldn\’t we care less about how a product looks like? I think we should care more about how the product tastes 😉

  6. Your Project is really interesting because it\’s a frequently discussed question in our medias. I find the best part of your research was your gustation test between normal and Bio products.

Find bellow a Link with a Video from a familly which made a test and only ate Bio products for two weeks. There will be an interesting result!

    1. Hello Daniela
Thank you very much for your comment. Unfortunately the link you mentioned in your comment is missing. We would be very happy if you could send the link again.
      Regards Team Q67
